Accelerated Reader Guidelines
South Hill Elementary Accelerated Reader Goals
2011-2012
The goal for each student is to achieve a designated amount of points within each nine weeks. The points are determined by student grade levels. If the child earns the allotted number of points during the nine weeks, he/she will be rewarded with participation in a special activity. Although points will continue to accumulate toward the end of year goal, the student must earn the goal points within the specific nine weeks. An average of 85% accuracy MUST be attained and maintained at the end of the marking period in order to be recognized.

Accelerated Reader Rewards
Any student meeting his/her specific AR goal (points plus accuracy) will be eligible to attend the designated AR activity at the end of that goal period. There will be a chart at the doorway of each homeroom. Students’ names will be placed on the chart as they meet their goal. Only students who meet the points and percentage goals for the current period will be recognized. The target goal must be completed in its entirety within one AR goal period.

South Hill Elementary Accelerated Reader Guidelines
2011-2012
The primary purpose of the Accelerated Reader program is to encourage students to read and develop lifelong reading habits. The program has been proven to improve reading comprehension skills in students participating fully in the program.
· Students must read and answer test questions independently without adult or peer intervention unless specified by accommodations on a 504 or IEP.
· No movie viewing may be substituted for reading a book.
· Most points should be earned from books that students have read independently. Students may also test on books used as a “Read-Aloud” by a teacher.
· Between 8:00 and 8:30, students may test in their homeroom classroom or a supervised computer lab. When classes are in the library, students will also be offered an opportunity to take a quiz. Classroom teachers will offer students the opportunity to take quizzes in the classroom during the day at times determined by the individual teachers.
· No student may test under parent supervision at any time.
· Students may only test during the school day between the hours of 8:00 AM – 3:15 PM.
· Parents are encouraged to check their child’s progress by logging on directly to RenPlace. Instructions are included in this packet in the parent resource section.
· Teachers should frequently review student progress by checking the Class Summary Report.
· Please encourage students to read and test on books within their reading range, but do not limit them to that range.
· Per Mrs. Covington, Accelerated Reader practice quizzes are not to be used as a grade.
· Be sure to close out the program completely when not testing. Failure to do so may cause data to be lost.
· Students with IEP’s will follow recognition levels based upon Star Literacy assessments. Case Managers will be responsible for monitoring the students’ progress and ZPD. In order to accommodate those students with IEP or 504 read aloud accommodations, these students may use the read aloud feature. If this is needed, Case Managers should notify Mrs. West.
· BOOKS MUST BE CLOSED DURING AN AR TEST!
***** STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER TAKE A QUIZ FOR SOMEONE ELSE. *****
***** STUDENTS CAUGHT CHEATING WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE REWARDS PROGRAM AND ALL POINTS WILL BE ERASED. *****
